The conference season for women entrepreneurs has begun! In the coming weeks, I will be attending several events both as a speaker and as an attendee. This is a great time to get out of your office and meet new business contacts and potential business resources. It is important to be ready for success. You won’t see the results you want if you don’t show up. It is important to show up with a strategy you can actually implement.
These six strategies will guarantee you success at conferences and other events.
1. Grab Your Seat
Find events in your area that your ideal client is attending and make a note of them on your calendar. Networking in person is the best way to connect with potential clients and get solid clients.
2. You are a standout style
Think about your networking wardrobe. It doesn’t matter what I wear to drop the kids at school in the morning, and it is not what I wear for a conference or networking event. What can give you confidence and a boost of energy? Before I go out speaking or networking, I like to have my hair cut and colored. Some women like to have their nails done or wear a unique piece of jewelry. What color makes you happy and energetic? These colors should be included in your wardrobe.
3. Prepare Your Marketing Materials
Make sure you have all of your marketing materials ready. Take a look at the business cards, brochures, and website. Are they accurate in describing your business and the services that you offer? Spend some time revising your materials or reaching out to a web designer or graphic specialist who can help you give your marketing a new look.
4. It’s important to arrive early
The old saying “The early bird gets the worm” is still true. This applies to events as well, particularly if you are nervous about networking at large gatherings. This is a great tip that can help you gain an advantage. You can choose your seat and greet guests when they arrive, rather than trying to force yourself into a group conversation.
5. Listen up
Build a relationship with people by asking them questions and listening to what they have to say. This will allow you to gain insight into their business and enable you to help them.
6. Follow up
You’ll have someone to follow up with if you use the five strategies that I’ve shared. Follow-up is key – do not delay in following up! Follow-up with phone or email immediately after an event if you promised a referral or indicated that lunch might be a good next step. You could lose valuable contacts because people are busy.
